Description
A 5mm Dual Color LED (also known as a Bi-color LED) is a single LED package that contains two different colored light-emitting diodes (usually Red and Green).
There are two main ways these are designed, and they work very differently depending on how many pins they have.
1. The 3-Pin Version (Common Pin)
This is the most common type. It works exactly like a simplified RGB LED. It has one shared pin and two individual pins for the colors.
-
How it works: You can turn on the Red side, the Green side, or both at the same time to create a third color (usually Yellow/Orange).
-
Common Cathode: The long pin goes to Ground (-). You apply power to the other pins to light them.
-
Common Anode: The long pin goes to Positive (+). You connect the other pins to Ground to light them.
